Lea Stein
was born in Paris in 1931 and started designing her now famous jewellery
in the late 1960's when her husband, Fernand discovered a process of laminating cellulose to
create a unique range of colours and patterns. Lea Stein produced
numerous designs including the tennis player, rhino and poodle until
1981 when the company ceased trading - this period is referred to as the
vintage period. Thankfully, for thousands of collectors, the company re
started some years later and emerged with designs such as 'Gomina', the
sleeping cat and 'Ric', the terrier. Each brooch has the trademark 'V'
shaped pin on the back and is signed 'LEA STEIN PARIS'. The manufacturing
process used means that no two brooches are exactly alike - one of the
reasons why they are collected worldwide. Several new
designs are introduced every year, the dragon, the new edition
fairy and 'Moustache' being the latest 2008 additions.
