First and Foremost: Buy What You Like

Vintage or modern? High end or budget? Designer or unnamed? I am always being asked the question 'What should I buy?' or 'Which is the best buy?'. Whilst Art Deco designer names such as Jakob Bengel sell at a premium, what I believe is that jewellery is meant to worn and loved so the advice I give is to trust your instinct and buy what you like and what you know you'll wear. A well designed but unsigned or unattributed piece of jewellery can look every bit as good as a designer piece so don't let the absence of a signature put you off. Likewise, an inexpensive piece can look a million dollars worn the right way with the right outfit so don't assume that a low price tag means it's not special. If a piece of jewellery sings to you and you can afford it, go for it regardless of name or price. That way it should give you constant pleasure and is less likely to end up sitting in a drawer unworn and unwanted.

Caring for Vintage Rhinestone Jewellery

Store your rhinestone jewellery in a clean, dark & dry place

Don’t allow rhinestones to come into contact with any moisture be it water, perfume or sweat. Moisture is the enemy of rhinestones & can damage the foil back of the stones leaving them dull & lifeless. It can also causes verdigris.

Take care cleaning your rhinestones. If they need a clean be gentle. Carefully use a wooden cocktail stick to pick out any dirt around the stones or brush with a soft toothbrush (a baby toothbrush is ideal). To polish the stones, use a cotton swab lightly dampened  with warm soapy water, alcohol or glass cleaner.

Gently polish with a soft cloth and allow to dry thoroughly upside down.

Never immerse your rhinestones in water or cleaner

Take extra care with aurora borealis stones as the surface can damage

If you wear a shoulder bag make sure you wear your brooch on the opposite side to avoid the strap catching on your brooch. You'd be amazed how many brooches are damaged or lost this way. Headless Lea Stein fox pins & dismembered Pavone brooches are more common than you think!

How to Wear Dress Clips

Dress clips were traditionally worn singly on the point of a 'V' neckline or in pairs. one in each corner of a square neckline. Whilst you can still wear them this way, another way to wear them on the lapel of a jacket or coat. Or take my tip and transform them into a necklace by clipping one onto a chain. This is a great way to bag yourself an inexpensive necklace! I have also worn pairs clipped onto the front of a pair of plain ballerina slippers or pumps which transforms them into something really special & unique.
